Arsenal are out of the Champions League at the Round-of-16 stage for the fifth consecutive year.
Like on two other occasions, it is once more a glorious defeat. One in which you couldn’t really fault the desire of the players to get the job done. The damage was already done at the Emirates and in the end, there was not just enough strength in one foot to stop the door from smashing shut.
We can say the players did their best.
Did not have to much to do and was alert to the little Monaco threatened to offer.
Hector will have a good future if he continues to keep his head down and improve. There were forgivable errors but this Champions League experience will be invaluable.
Well played on the night though he’d wish he had done more of the same three weeks earlier.
Excellent defensive display by Laurent. Shame there were not enough corners for him to come up with one of his trademark crucial goals.
Played his part well. Provided the ball that led to Ramsey’s goal.
Great game in the first half and duly obliged, like in the first leg, to being sacrificed for more attacking endeavour in the second period.
Not much of an influence in the final third though he had more touches of the ball than any other. Coquelin’s substitution meant he had to stay deep the last 20 minutes.
He looked very much up for it and, bar some casual passes, did all he possibly could. More shooting practice Mesut, you can score too!
Most disappointing Arsenal player on the pitch. He could have done more by staying on his feet and passing more simply instead of going down looking for a penalty. Needs a break?
Danny was Arsenal’s greatest threat until he was substituted. Great performance from Welbeck.
Giroud: 8 (MOTM)
Very intelligent goal and probably could have let Alexis power his header through. Bet he’ll look back to the first leg at the Emirates and see how different it would have been had he scored one of the many clear chances he had.
Ramsey:7… Got the crucial second goal and proves why he is the best midfielder Wenger has.
Walcott/Gibbs: No impact of note
