Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is hopeful of signing Arsenal target Jose Gimenez in the winter transfer window.

Arsenal were linked with a move for Gimenez in the last transfer window but Atletico Madrid were not prepared to sell the defender.

Last week, a report in Spain claimed Gimenez is now open to the idea of changing clubs in the winter transfer window after falling out with Diego Simeone.

He was quickly linked with a move to the Premier League with Manchester United and Arsenal said to be interested in signing him.

According to the Daily Star, Manchester United have made the first move and have enquired about the possibility of signing the defender. Mourinho was made aware that Atletico could consider selling Gimenez for about €50m and this has given the Portuguese hope that he would be able to sign the Uruguay international.

Wenger has reportedly earmarked Gimenez as a replacement for Mertesacker whose contract expires at the end of the season. He would now have to consider making a move for the Uruguayan six months earlier than planned.

Gimenez has established himself as one of football’s most talented defenders and would be a great signing for us but I have doubts over the possibility of him moving to the Emirates.

Wenger spent £35m on Mustafi in the last transfer window and I think he is unlikely to spend huge sum of money on a centre defender anytime soon.

Gimenez is not the type of defender that will come cheap, Atletico are not the type of club that can be convinced to sell cheap, so I think it will be difficult to sign the player considering free-spending Manchester United are also in the race to sign him.
