One long-term Arsenal absentee has set his sights on a return to action this summer.
Gunners supporters have become accustomed to seeing players on the sidelines for an extended period of time. It happened with Jack Wilshere in 2011 and more recently to fan favourite Santi Cazorla.
However, whilst the Spaniard continues to battle back from a serious achilles injury suffered during the 6-0 Champions League group stage win over Ludogorets in October 2016, there’s another midfielder that has been out for nearly as long.
Last May highly rated youngster Gedion Zelalem suffered an anterior cruciate ligament tear whilst on international duty with the United States at the FIFA Under-20 World Cup.
It’s been a long road back to full fitness for the midfielder, but he took to social media on Monday night to share some positive news about when he will be able to make a return to action.
A post via his official Instagram account read: “After a setback in January, I will now be back playing in pre season.
“Progress has been very good past couple months and already stronger than I’ve ever been.
“Next season will be very exciting for me.”
It was actually during pre-season back in the summer of 2013 where Zelalem first caught the attention of Arsenal supporters having been spotted by scout Daniel Karbassiyoon playing in the Dallas Cup.
Manager Arsene Wenger predicted a bright future for the midfielder when speaking about him a couple of years ago.
“I think he’s a player who has quality, top quality,” said the Frenchman. “He might be a bit longer to mature because he is a little bit behind on the body structure.
“But I’m sure he will be a great player who matures maybe a bit slowly physically. “But overall, I’m convinced that he’ll have a great career.”
