Wojciech Szczesny says his decision to leave Arsenal in 2015 has turned out to be the right one.

The goalkeeper is currently on his second consecutive season on loan at AS Roma and has become a key player at the Italian club. He featured in almost every game for the Italian side in his two year spell and he thinks he has benefited a lot since leaving Arsenal.

Szczesny was Arsenal’s first choice goalie before the arrival of Petr Cech from Chelsea in 2015. The arrival of Cech forced him to leave the Emirates on loan, he could well have decided to sit on the bench as back up but he chose to go out to develop himself and that he believes has made him a better player.

“I could have stayed in an environment that was going negatively for me. Instead the opportunity that came gave me a fresh start,” Szczesny told the Guardian, as quoted by Tribal Football.

“You get a new perspective. You get new coaches and influences.

You learn new drills. You do new things. Now I am very happy that it happened, even if the first impression was that I might be out of Arsenal , which was very painful.

“Now I think it was probably the best thing that could have happened to me.”

Szczesny whose contract at Arsenal runs out in 2018 doesn’t want to return to the Emirates to play as back up to Cech which will leave us with a lot of work to do. Should we want the Pole to return, we may have to give him assurances over playing time which would be difficult to do because of Cech’s presence. His contract situation will leave us with no option but to sell him if we can’t convince him to stay.

I am also convinced that the goalkeeper’s decision to leave the Emirates is a good one, he wouldn’t have been able to garner the experience he has gotten in the last two years had he been satisfy with sitting on our bench.
