Former Arsenal striker Kanu Nwankwo was the brain behind Nigeria youngster Kelechi Nwakali move to Arsenal, according to the Daily Star.

The Nigeria U17 international completed a move to Arsenal recently and has reportedly signed a five year deal which will take effect from his 18th year birthday.

And according to reports in Nigeria, Kanu Nwakwo was instrumental in the negotiations involving the club and the player’s camp.

“Kanu Nwankwo has played for Arsenal, so Arsene Wenger contacted him to ask about Nwakali. Through him, Arsenal were able to sign the player,” a source close to Nwakali told Allnigeriasoccer.com, as quoted by the Daily Star.

“Nwakali has an agent, Stellar Group, but Kanu brought in because he is close to us, so we connected him with the British agent.

“Arsenal followed him during the World Cup. Manchester City wanted him even before the tournament but told him to train with the Academy team before being offered a contract, so the deal collapsed.”

Arsenal had to fight off fierce competition from Bayern Munich and Manchester City in the race to sign the 17 year old.

The midfielder was the best player in the FIFA U17 World Cup that was held in Chile last year. he could be a star in the Gunners first team should he continue to improve.
