Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has emerged as a shock contender for the England national team job, according to reports.

Roy Hodgson resigned as manager of the Three Lions on Monday following the team’s round of 16 defeat to Iceland and the FA are already working on getting a successor.

According to Telegraph Sport via the Squawka, Arsene Wenger has been sounded out as a possible candidate to replace Hodgson.

The report claims Wenger could be tempted by the opportunity of managing the England national team but his contract at Arsenal doesn’t expire until the end of next season and the French man wants to see out the remainder of his contract at Arsenal at least.

Shockingly, that hasn’t deterred the FA as the report claims the English football regulatory body is prepared to wait for Wenger until his contract expires next summer. Current England U21 boss Gareth Southgate could take charge of the Three Lions temporary until Wenger becomes available next season.

However, former Arsenal striker Ian wright has revealed he doesn’t want Wenger to be England’s next manager.

‘I wouldn’t want him [Arsene Wenger] as England manager,’ he said.’

Wenger who stated he would be attracted to managing a national team few days before Hodgson’s resignation has reportedly been offered a two year extension by Arsenal but is yet to sign the new deal.

It will be interesting to find out if the Gunners boss will turn down the contract extension in favor of the England job.
