Napoli chief Aurelio De Laurentiis has revealed that Arsenal target Gonzalo Higuain has a £72m release clause in his contract, according to London24.
The Gunners were linked with a move to sign the striker last summer but failed to lure the Argentine to the Emirates.
Higuain has been a long term target of the Gunners with Arsenal among the number of clubs that tried to sign him when he was at Madrid, but the striker subsequently joined Napoli.
His performances at Napoli has been superb and has drawn interest from Manchester United as well as Chelsea.
Napoli Chief who has an history of getting the best transfer fee from clubs interested in his star players has revealed that there is a whooping £72m release clause in the player’s contract that needs to be activated before he has any chance of leaving the San Paolo.
“I put the €94m release clause into Higuain’s contract because I know how to evaluate players,” De Laurentiis said.
“Now he has 20 goals in 20 Serie A games.
“We already have a strong squad, so it’s difficult to improve it. I gave my all-clear to buy someone who is truly functional for the project.”
Arsenal who are reportedly in search for a world class striker next season could have turned their attention to Higuain should the opportunity arise, but with a whooping £72m clause in his contract as well as De Laurentiis difficulty in negotiations, Arsenal could just turn to other reliable options.
The Gunners have also been linked with a move to sign BVB’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
