Arsene Wenger has urged Brazilian defender Gabriel to improve his English Language and also claimed his lack of fluency in English is the reason the defender is struggling in recent games.

The defender moved to Arsenal in January 2015 and struggled to get into the Gunners starting xi in his first six months. Although the defender has seen more first team opportunities this season but Wenger believes he still has to improve his grasp of English Language in order to communicate with his teammates better on the pitch.

“I would prefer him to have better English,” the Frenchman told reporters. “In a fraction of a second sometimes somebody can help you.

“He has Nacho Monreal who plays next to him, he can speak Spanish. I believe as well he’s working very hard on his English and he’s improving quite quickly,” as quoted by the Daily Express.

Gabriel was criticised after the game against Manchester United on Sunday which the Gunners lost 3-2. But Wenger was quick to defend the former Villarreal man claiming he is not the only one culpable for the team’s loss on Sunday.

“It’s difficult for me to go into individual assessments of performances. We have to respond as a team and not criticise individual players for their performance,” he added.

“It was a difficult game for everybody and we want to respond collectively.”
