Arsenal have been given a fresh boost to line up a bid for Borussia Dortmund star, Marco Reus, as reports per the Independent from Germany suggest that Bayern Munich will not be making a move for him.
The 24-year old star is in high demand amongst European clubs and Bayern’s status and antecedents have made them one of the main favourites to land the coveted playmaker. Previous situations with Mario Goetze and Robert Lewandowski had made it a clear possibility that anyone who would be interested in Reus would have Bayern as the main rivals.
With these reports now, one major obstacle seems out of the way and Emirates chiefs will surely be weighing up a bid for him. There is just the mere £20m buy-out clause in his current deal and refusal to sign a new package to keep him beyond 2017 at the Westfalenstadion has opened the door wide for interests to flow.
There will be even more parties interested now if Bayern have firmly shelved those plans and Arsenal will have to make a good case to convince Reus that the club would be the best place for him to win titles. He left Borussia Monchengladbach at a time when they were playing good football just to join his old Dortmund who were the German Champions and having not managed that success since he joined them, it will take more than the promise of good football to lure him to the Emirates.
Arsenal’s major rival to landing Reus, it appears, would be majorly among fellow English rivals, as United, Chelsea, City and Liverpool have apparently been very up-to-date on the playmaker’s situation. Jose Mourinho had denied that Chelsea were interested in Reus, but the manner of his response that the player belonged to Dortmund at the moment because “the window is closed” could not be taken as him throwing in of the towel.
If Dortmund do not make the Champions League this season, that will be the final stamp of his exit but then it would be too late to wait till then before such moves are made. But then, Arsenal will have to show proof of competing in the top level, basically win a major trophy again this year, if Reus will be interested. He may be a life-long fan of Rosicky and may be willing to emulate his footsteps from Dortmund to Arsenal but that won’t happen without a guarantee of titles.
