Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho set for new deal at current club.
The heat that has generated over the tussle for in-demand young Portuguese midfielder, William Carvalho, is set to take a chill pill as a massive new deal awaits his signature in Lisbon.
Carvalho, 22, has been chased by several of Europe’s top clubs, with Arsenal and Manchester United thought to have been in the lead. After a hugely impressive season at Sporting, followed by a decent shift in Portugal’s brief exploit in Brasil, he was tipped to join one of the two clubs. Arsenal, depending on what source you believe, had at least one bid in the region of £24million rejected by Sporting. A fee over £10million short of the buyout clause contained in his contract.
Carvalho’s new deal, if he signs it, will see him earn about 5 times his current annual salary of about €100,000. The offer may also see a significant increase in the figure of that exit clause, further creating a repulsion for potential suitors.
It means that Arsenal would most likely have to consider other options as Wenger is not the man you’d expect to splash that sort of cash despite end-of-year reports showing the money is actually available for more transfer business.
The need Arsenal has for a stout defensive midfield enforcer is well documented. For all the brilliance of the attack, the defense which has been plagued by a couple of injuries have largely had to live on their own with little or no protection from either Arteta or Flamini.
Lassana Diarra has come up as a possible alternative to rescue the situation. In the face of players currently available in the market in the position, he may well be worth the shot. He is will come at a free, being out of contract and available to join before the winter window opens.
Of course, there’s still a chance that Carvalho will turn down the new deal, if Arsenal decide to muster the giant fee. Personal terms will also have to match (probably surpass it) that currently offered by Sporting. That would present its problems, though, as no player should play for Arsenal save for a real professional desire to put on the proud cannon-crested red and white.
