Arsenal have added Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez to its shortlist as we search for a replacement for Arsene Wenger whose future is currently cloudy.
Wenger’s contract expires at the end of this season and is yet to decide whether to sign a new deal or not. The club hierarchy has reportedly offered the boss a new two year deal to show their desire to keep him but he is insistent he won’t make a decision on his future until the season ends.
This has put Arsenal in a tight position as Wenger’s decision to quit could throw us into turmoil. In order not to be caught unprepared, we are reportedly in search of successors.
And according to the Mirror, Benitez has been added to Arsenal’s shortlist.
The former Chelsea man is one of the four managers in line to replace Wenger, alongside Barcelona’s Luis Enrique, Borussia Dortmund’s Thomas Tuchel and Monaco’s Leornado Jardim.
Benitez will be an unpopular choice among the four candidates due to his history with Liverpool and Chelsea but he could win some Gooners heart by including club legend Thierry Henry as a member of his coaching staff.
Wenger faced criticism from some Gooners when Henry left his coaching role in the club academy last year an a return to the first team will definitely excite some fans.
However, this depends on Wenger’s decision and we’ll have to wait a little while to find out if he will sign a new deal or not.
