Unsettled Uruguayan superstar Edinson Cavani has reportedly given Arsenal the green light to come and get him, despite strong interest from Liverpool and Manchester United.
The ex-Napoli man has continued to find it uneasy to fully adjust to life at Paris due to a largely subdued role in the team where he has had to drift towards the lines to accommodate the “Zlatan”. This has seen a progressive chipping away from his goal-scoring returns which established him as one of the most feared strikers in the world during his time in Italy.
With the acquisition of Falcao from Monaco by United and Cavani himself having urged Suarez to leave Liverpool last season, it is unlikely he will be turning out at either Manchester or Liverpool, thereby making Arsenal, if they want him, genuine favorites to get him.
The demand now may be defensive cover, it is an absolute no-brainer that there should be a debate to sign a player of such caliber. We must simply go for it, gong-ho.
Chelsea’s Diego Costa has so far this season shown what the presence of a real predator can do when given half chances in the opponents’ box, and while we have high hopes for Danny Welbeck to finally come good sooner than later, the capture of Cavani by Arsenal will not only give us a potent target man who will keep defenders on their toes for 90 minutes, he is experienced in top level football with regular appearance in the Champions League over the past seasons. Cavani, with Marek Hamsik and current PSG teammate, Ezequiel Lavezzi, were the core of the dangerous frontline which pushed Juventus all the way in the battle for the Scudetto 3 years ago, the closest any team has come to challenging them.
A hard man to pin to a spot, Cavani is a proven goal scorer, with 104 goals in his first three seasons at Napoli, and at 27, is he just approaching the peak of his career. PSG have certainly not exploited him to his full potential which is why a move away, especially to a team which will still afford him the platform to be in the biggest competitions and play him in his favorite role, is surely an option the stone-faced dynamite must be willing to explore.
It is doubtful that Arsene will sanction a January move in the region of 55million which PSG paid Napoli for him, having splashed over 70 million within this summer window already, and the signing of Welbeck to play in the centre-forward role may be on his mind too. Nonetheless, having a competitive squad is about having competition within the players for roles in the team. The arrivals of Ozil and Sanchez have their varying degrees of motivation on the team, and the addition of another superstar to the team will give us a formidable troika which will match any team in the world.
Ian Wright, Denis Bergkamp, Thierry Henry – there has always been a figurehead in attack for every successful Arsenal side. There is a real chance now to snap up one of Europe’s elites to spearhead this generations’ quest for glory.
“It’s all for grabs now!”
