Olivier Giroud has urged caution amid the increasing hype and transfer speculation surrounding Monaco sensation Kylian Mbappe.
The 18-year-old enjoyed a stellar breakthrough season with Monaco, scoring 15 goals in their Ligue 1 title winning campaign and starring in an unlikely run to the Champions League semi-finals.
Mbappe was rewarded with his first call-up to the senior French national squad earlier this season and watched on from the bench last week as Giroud scored a hat-trick in a 5-0 friendly win over Paraguay.
Arsenal are among number of heavyweight European clubs who have been reported to have made substantial bids this summer, but Giroud believes his new international teammate, and potential club colleague, should be allowed to develop away from the glare of the media spotlight.
‘I will not go against what you say about him,’ said the former Montpellier man.
‘He is a good kid, a kid, young man, forgive me, who is full of maturity. But I think we should leave him alone a little.’
Mbappe’s potential move to the Emirates could spell bad news for Giroud, who lost his regular starting place last season despite scoring 12 goals in 29 appearances.
And the 30-year-old admitted earlier this week he would review his situation over the summer.
He said: ‘It is true that I have had limited playing time but it was for a certain amount of time, it is true there were things against me. I will not settle for another year with such little playing time.’
