Leicester City midfielder Riyad Mahrez has revealed he wants to join Roma this summer, handing Arsenal a huge blow in the process.
Mahrez is one of Arsenal’s summer targets but the club is yet to make a concrete move because of its pursuit of Thomas Lemar. It’s been widely reported that Mahrez is only an alternative to Lemar and Wenger won’t pursue a move for the Algerian until it becomes clear that he won’t be able to get the Monaco man.
However, Arsenal now face the risk of missing out on both players after Mahrez declared his desire to join Roma.
“I know Roma have made an offer, but Leicester turned it down,” he told Sky Sports via the Express.
“There is nothing to do at the moment, Roma are a big club and I’d like to talk with them.
“I can’t do it until Leicester accept their offer. The club know what I want to do.
“I will do my best until I play for this team but of course I hope something will happen in the transfer market.”
It was previously suggested that Mahrez was holding out for a move to Arsenal but with an offer not forthcoming from the Gunners he is now willing to move to Rome.
This could be a big blow to Arsenal if they fail to sign Lemar. Monaco are adamant they won’t sell the talented playmaker despite the player wanting the move and Mahrez desire to resolve his future as soon as possible may not favor Arsenal.
Two bids have already been made for Lemar as progress hasn’t been made on that front and with the transfer window closing in a few weeks time, Arsenal may end up not signing any of the two players if Mahrez joins Roma.
