Arsenal are locked in talks with Monaco over the transfer of Thomas Lemar, according to Sky Sports journalist Dharmesh Sheth.
Monaco have already knocked back Arsenal on three occasions but Wenger is still determined to get the winger who he had identified as his top target.
Last week, the third bid worth around £45m was turned down but some members of the Gunners hierarchy believe it’s a ploy by the French club to get a massive fee for the playmaker.
Speaking on Sky Sports news, leading journalist Sheth said, as quoted by the Daily Star:
“Despite Monaco’s insistence that he stays at the club, we understand Arsenal maintain a keen interest in the player.
“It’s thought talks between the clubs continue.
“Monaco’s not for sale stance has been seen in some quarters as a way to encourage Arsenal to make a higher offer.
“Perhaps we haven’t heard the last of Thomas Lemar in this window.”
Both clubs in talks mean there is a slight chance that Arsenal will get its man despite Monaco’s public insistence that he isn’t for sale because if it were not so, the French club won’t have come to the negotiation table.
It is obviously going take an outrageous fee to finally force Monaco to sell the midfielder and Wenger is prepared to do whatever it takes to get his target.
Wenger yesterday revealed that he is still working on new signings and hopefully Lemar will be one of those to arrive before the transfer window closes.
I don’t know why Wenger is hesistant to splash the cash on a player who contributed more than 25 goals and assists together last season.
He still has the money, why not spend it before it becomes too late??
