Hector Bellerin has insisted he never considered leaving Arsenal despite the reported interest in his services from Barcelona and Manchester City.
The 21 year old was being tipped to complete a move back to the Camp Nou while Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola was also said to be keeping tabs on the defender ahead of a future move.
This forced Arsenal to open negotiations to extend the defender’s contract and on Monday afternoon, the player confirmed he has signed a new six and a half year deal with the Gunners.
The defender has now revealed he is happy to pen the new deal and has now reiterated that he never considered leaving the Emiates, despite rumors about his future.
“I’m really, really happy and this club is my home right now,” he told the club’s official website, via Sportsmole.
“I’ve been here for more than five years now so I was really, really excited when the club told me that they wanted to extend my contract. I wasn’t thinking about anything else other than staying here and continuing my development here.
“This is where I’m happy. I’m just very grateful and pleased to have signed. Arsenal is not only about being a footballer, you have to be a good person to play here. That’s what everyone transmits inside the club. You represent more than just a football club. I’m a player who tries to be an example for everyone, not just on the pitch but off it as well.
“Now I’ve just got to keep on progressing, keep working hard to be the best player I can be, and hopefully help the team to be where its got to be, to win some silverware. That’s what everyone wants and that’s what I’m working towards.”
I think Bellerin’s new deal is one of Arsenal’s best piece of transfer business this year on par with Mustafi’s signing. The Spaniard has become a key part of our starting xi in recent weeks and at just 21, his potential is immense.
It would have been a big loss had the player been tempted to leave the Emirates but thankfully, he will be staying with us for at least the next six and a half years.
