I looks like Arsenal fans will wait a little longer to see either of Riyad Mahrez or Thomas Lemar at the Emirates as reports claim our 3rd signing could well be a replacement for Santi Cazorla and jack Wilshere.

Arsenal are favourites to sign Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho, according to BetStars.

William Carvalho has long been linked with a move to the Premier League but a deal is yet to materialise.

Arsenal are said to have held an interest in the Portugal international for some time and are reportedly back in for him this summer.

Transfer guru Tancredi Palmeri claimed the Gunners had held talks with Sporting last weekend and negotiations are underway.

And bookmakers BetStars have now made the north London club favourites to sign the 25-year-old at 2/1.

“Arsene Wenger looks to have reignited his interest in long-term target William Carvalho,” BetStars director Ian Marmion said.

“Arsenal are now the 2/1 favourites to sign the defensive midfielder.

“Carvalho would be a crucial addition to the Arsenal setup and would shore up the midfield, fulfilling an important role in front of the back four.

“The Gunners current crop of midfielders, including Granit Xhaka and Francis Coquelin, proved to be inconsistent last season so the 25-year-old Carvalho could be an ideal addition.”

Carvalho has been a crucial player for Sporting in recent seasons, making 155 appearances and is under contract until June 2020.

However, transfer expert Palmeri claimed last weekend a move to the Emirates is very much on the cards for the midfielder.

“Arsenal are in talks with Sporting for William Carvalho,” he tweeted.

But the Gunners are not alone in their interest and reportedly face competition from newly-promoted Newcastle.
