Arsene Wenger could make a move for Manchester United midfielder Micheal Carrick, according to reports.
Carrick’s future at Man Utd is in doubt after Jose Mourinho hinted that his age could be a stumbling block to him getting a new deal at Old Trafford.
The midfielder who turns 36 later this year could now be allowed to leave for free at the end of the season.
And according to the Sun, Wenger is interested in bringing the midfielder to the Emirates as a free agent this summer.
Carrick has established himself as one of Premier League’s best midfielders in the last decade and Wenger who tried to sign him previously when he was at Tottenham is now leading the race to snap him up at the end of the season.
Wenger remains a big admirer of the former Spurs man and sees him as the right person to solve our midfield crisis.
Granit Xhaka hasn’t lived up to expectations since he joined and injuries seem to be taking its toll on our midfield season by season. The addition of Carrick could provide the much needed experience to our squad and also provide cover when injuries begins to set it.
Wenger spent close to £35m to bring Xhaka here last summer, it’s unlikely he will want to spend big to strengthen that position again in the next transfer window and I don’t even think it makes sense spending big on a particular position year after year.
I’m definitely in support of this move, a move for Carrick and the impending arrival of Jack Wilshere will get our midfield sorted for next season at least for the short term until we are ready to spend big there again.
Fellow Gooners, what do you think? Would a free transfer for Carrick make sense? Or would it represent a lack of ambition on Arsenal’s part?
