Arsene Wenger has admitted that it is important for Arsenal to tie Alexis Sanchez down on a new contract.

The 27 year old forward showed his quality in our 3-1 over Bournemouth with two well taken goals and also a hatrick against West Ham last weekend and Wenger knows it is very important to keep him at the Emirates.

Sanchez is already into the penultimate year of his contract at Arsenal and we know how difficult it could be when a player is allowed to enter into the final year of his career and considering Sanchez’s qualities, there will be no shortage of offers for his services.

In a bid to avoid that, the club has since opened talks with the player to extend his contract but according to the press, progress is not being made.

Following his match winning performances in recent weeks, Wenger was asked to give an update on the forward’s contract extension.

“It is important,” Wenger said when asked about his contract [Via Sky Sports].

“How important it is, I don’t know – we will not sort it tonight.

“We have some time in front of us. You (the media) like us to spend money, so you should be happy!”

Obviously, Wenger refused to give much information about what stage negotiations are at the moment. It could either be the boss wants to keep things on a low key or the player is not close to signing an extension because of money and if it is the latter, it doesn’t bode well for us.

However, i’v got this feeling that he would sign a new deal with us. Although, it won’t be easy, I think we can convince the player to extend his stay here. It’s only going to be a matter of time.
