Arsene Wenger admits he has been pleasantly surprised by the improvement Olivier Giroud has made during his four-and-a-half years with the club.
Giroud, 30, signed a contract extension on Thursday, alongside fellow Frenchmen Laurent Koscielny and Francis Coquelin, delighted manager Wenger who brought him over from Ligue 1 in the summer of 2012.
“He’s a player who has big international experience,” Wenger told Arsenal Player. “He has played many international games, many Champions League games and he’s much more confident today that he belongs where he plays.
“But I believe technically he has improved tremendously and that he has qualities that nobody else has. On top of that, he’s a fighter. He has shown that again against West Brom [Bournemouth and Preston].
“He can have a challenge, face it and put the effort in ready to achieve it. Overall, I think he’s a much more complete player than when he arrived.”
Since arriving at the Emirates Stadium from Montpellier, France international Giroud has scored 91 goals in 206 matches in all competitions.
