Arsene Wenger will have to sanction a staggering £150m in wages if he is to get Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez to sign new contracts, according to a report in the Daily Star.
Both players are into the penultimate year of their contracts and as expected, Arsenal want them to extend their contracts. Although the players are open to the idea of staying at the Emirates, their demands have made it difficult for an agreement to be reached.
Both players are demanding a significant increase to their current salary, previous reports had claimed they want a new deal worth about £200,000 a week but the Sun has now revealed the players are asking for a lot more than that.
The popular English tabloid claims the players want a new deal worth around £300,000 a week each for the next five years which would amount to about £78m for each player and Arsenal are reluctant to pay that much.
The report claims Wenger believes he should be the highest earner at the club but he could be forced to abandon that principle if he wants to keep both players happy.
This is indeed a tricky situation for Arsenal, we know the club works with a strict wage budget and the player’s demands are obviously way out of the club’s wage structure.
Everyone knows how necessary it is to keep the duo here but it is very unlikely that we’d meet their demands. Although Wenger has been bullish that we will get the duo to sign new deals but latest reports have sent fears to Gooners and there is a feeling that we may lose one, if not the two players next summer.
