Arsene Wenger says he wants Euro 2016 star Olivier Giroud to sign a contract extension with Arsenal but admits he is struggling to keep the French man happy.

The striker’s contract expires at the end of next season and the boss wants the French man to extend his contract but Wenger is aware that the striker’s current situation could make it difficult to convince him to sign a new deal.

Giroud lost his place in the starting xi to Alexis Sanchez at the beginning of the season and has found it difficult to force his way back into the team.

The impressive form of Alexis Sanchez has made it difficult for Wenger to make alterations to his starting xi which has placed Giroud in a difficult position but with his contract closing in on its last 18 months, Wenger has urged his compatriot to look beyond his current situation and sign a new deal.

“How do we keep them all happy? Honestly I don’t know,” he said of his forwards.

“If you have only one striker, the press says ‘why don’t you buy another striker?’ Once you buy one more they say ‘how can you keep him happy?’

“We are in a world where you have to know where you want to be and in my case I want Giroud to stay, I want Giroud to extend his contract.

“After he has to live with the competition and for me he is a very important player at the club, on the pitch and off the pitch.

“I want him to stay, he has to decide if he can live with what is going on but personally I like Giroud very much.”

Giroud has already been linked with a move to the Serie A this season but the player is not interested in a January move and will prefer to wait until next summer to assess his future.

Should his situation not change and if he hasn’t signed a new before the end of the season, he could just decide to seek for first team football elsewhere and if that happens, we will have no choice but to let him leave considering he will have just one year left in his contract by then.
