Arsene Wenger has hinted that Arsenal could open talks with Santi Cazorla over a contract extension in January.

Cazorla is into the final year of his contract and there had been no indication from the club until now that the midfielder will be offered a new deal.

Knowing how delicate it is for a club to allow a player’s contract run into its last six months, some Gooners feared that this could be Cazorla’s last season at the Emirates.

Interest from other top clubs worsened the fear among Arsenal supporters and even the player’s public declaration that he’d love to remain at the Emirates didn’t do anything to pacify the fans.

Wenger has now given fans who want the midfielder to stay longer a bit of hope by claiming a decision on the midfielder’s future will be taken in January.

When asked about Cazorla’s future, Wenger said, as quoted by The Daily Star:

“Santi has six months left and we have an option.

“The decision on him will be taken in January.

“It does not depend on his fitness. It’s my decision only.

“Santi is an exceptional player and it’s just for him to be capable to play.

“And the dressing room needs a balance between experience and youth team players.

“You need to be guided as well by some experienced players when you go through difficult times.”

Although the boss didn’t state categorically that Cazorla will be offered a new deal but i’d like to believe that he will be offered one because of his importance to our team.

The Spaniard is crucial to our style of play just like Ozil and Sanchez, so there is no reason he shouldn’t get fresh terms.

However, as a Gooner there’s something that bothers me about this whole Cazorla saga, if truly the decision to offer the player a new contract is solely Wenger’s, why wait until the last minute before offering him fresh terms?

Cazorla will be allowed to enter into talks with other clubs in January and should he be tempted to snub a contract renewal, if we decide to offer him one, we will only have ourselves to blame.
