Arsene Wenger has confirmed Arsenal are yet to offer Per Mertesacker a new deal, despite the defender’s contract expiring next summer.

Mertesacker was appointed as the club’s captain following the departure of Mikel Arteta in the summer but the defender’s long term future has not been resolved.

Wenger has revealed the club is in no hurry to renew the German’s future at the club and will wait until he returns back to full fitness before making a decision.

The German suffered a serious injury during pre-season which will keep him out of action until the end of the year and Wenger is keen to see how he performs after recovery.

Long term injuries can be very dangerous as players might not be able to recover their best form and with Mertesacker already approaching the end of his career, Wenger is keen to see him prove his fitness before handing him a new contract.

“At the moment we have not dealt yet with that situation,” Wenger told TalkSport .

“We are not especially [waiting for him to be fit], but of course he has to come back.

“We will see together at some stage when he will be back in full training.”

Mertesacker will have to work harder to impress Wenger as the arrival of Shkodran Mustafi has pushed him further down the pecking order.

We believe Wenger’s decision to wait on the defender is the right thing to do as players who are already into their thirties sometimes struggle to stay fit after a serious injury. Arteta and Rosicky are perfect examples as they spent more time on the treatment table than on the pitch towards the end of their Arsenal career.
