Arsene Wenger is interested in signing Valencia left back Jose Gaya, according to reports.
Few weeks ago, a report surfaced from the Telegraph that Wenger has made signing a left back at the end of the season his priority. No name was mentioned at the time of the initial report but now The Mirror are claiming the boss has identified his priority target.
The report claims Valencia’s talented defender Gaya is the man Wenger wants to bring to the Emirates next summer.
The 21 year old alongside our own Hector Bellerin are regarded as the future of Spanish football and Wenger is keen for both players long term future to be at the Emirates.
Nacho Monreal turns 31 in February and considering the fullback position is one that needs pace and strength, there are fears about how long he can continue to play at the top level.
Kieran Gibbs’ future is also in doubt. The England international has been unable to force his way back into Wenger’s starting xi and currently has less than two years left in his contract with the club. Gaya’s arrival will definitely affect him the most and push him closer to the exit door.
Wenger’s plan to sign a new left back is an indication that the French man will stay beyond his current contract which expires at the end of the season.
The boss’ long-term future has been in doubt for a long time after refusing to extend his contract but his recent move is a big hint that he will stay here for at least next season.
I think a move to sign a left back is the right thing to do as I have been of the opinion that the position is the weakest in our starting xi and Wenger’s plan to sign Gaya makes it even more wonderful. The young Spaniard as established himself as one of La Liga ‘s most talented fullbacks and with the right tutor, he can develop into one of the best fullbacks in the future.
It will be great to have two of Spain’s most talented fullbacks with us next season.
