Arsenal have emerged as frontrunners to sign Nice midfielder Jean-Michael Seri, according to reports.
Seri was a key performer for Nice last season, scoring seven goals and providing nine assists in 34 games and helping his club secure a Champions League spot in the process.
His superb performances caught the attention of Arsene Wenger who has now stepped up his interest and According to L’Equipe via the Mirror, Arsenal are now leading the race to sign the playmaker.
Roma recently enquired about the midfielder but were reluctant to activate the £36m release clause in his contract, giving Arsenal the chance to move to the front of the queue for his signature.
The report claims Arsenal are now showing ‘real interest’ in the 26 year old midfield maestro, also refered to as “African Xavi” and described as a “perfect replacement” for injured Santi Cazorla.
Tottenham and Swansea have also been linked with Seri but none of them stand a chance against Arsenal at the moment.
However, there could prove to be a problem in Arsenal’s pursuit of Seri as the midfielder will only leave Nice if he is guaranteed a starting spot at his next club.
Wenger has raided the French league of its best players in the past and Seri could be the next if we can guarantee he will play enough games.
His £36m release clause won’t also be a problem considering Wenger is willing to spend big this summer.
