Arsenal are interested in signing Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak, as a replacement for Petr Cech, according to Dailycannon.com.

Cech who turns 35 in May is getting closer to the end of his career and it is only wise that Arsenal begin to search for his successor.

Few days ago, we were linked with sunderland’s 22 year old goalkeeper Jordan Pickford but Calciomercato reckons that Oblak is another player high on Wenger’s wish list.

Although Arsenal currently have Wojciech Szczesny and Emiliano Martinez on its books both of whom have been tipped to be the club’s number one in the future, Wenger is yet to be convinced by any of them. Szczesny is currently out on loan at Roma and could be sold permanently next summer while Martinez at 24 is yet to show that he has the potential to be the club’s future No. 1.

Oblak, 24, has established himself as one of Europe’s best goalkeepers and is now being linked as a successor to Cech.

Wenger who is desperate to sign a good young goalkeeper is eyeing a move for Oblak and this is understandable considering how difficult it was to replace Lehmann until we finally signed Cech in 2015.

However, it is going to be difficult to sign Oblak considering his importance to Atletico and the fee that would be involved in signing him.

He has an £84m release clause in his contract and the Spanish giants knowing how reluctant they are to lose their best players could insist we activate the clause.

I don’t think Wenger will pay anywhere near the clause for a goalkeeper and that could complicate our chances of signing him but it would be amazing if we are able to pull this one off.

Let’s just keep our fingers crossed and watch how things unfold.
