Emmanuel Petit doesn’t believe Arsenal have any chance of signing French duo Karim Benzema and Kylian Mbappe.

Arsenal are looking to strengthen its attacking options this summer and have been linked with both players.

Benzema has been a long time target of Arsenal, having been linked with a move to the Emirates since his time at Lyon. Even more recently, reports in Spain claim the striker could be allowed to leave the Bernabeu this year and the Emirates again was being touted as a possible destination.

Mbappe who had a fine camapaign for Monaco this season, is also a target of Arsenal and is being linked with a host of top clubs.

However, Petit believes we may not be able to sign these top players due to lack of Champions League football.

Arsenal will not be competing in the Champions League competition for the first time in 21 years and Petit believes this will affect our ability to attract top players.

‘If I am Benzema, I don’t leave Real Madrid for Arsenal. Never,’ explained Petit, who won the title with the Gunners during a three-year spell at the club. ‘If Madrid want me to stay, I don’t leave.’

The ex Gunner winger also added that he doesn’t see Arsenal signing Mbappe even if we were in the Champions League as his €100m price tag would have been a problem for us to pay.

‘Mbappe will never come to Arsenal as he will cost at least €100million and you have to break the salary cap and I don’t see Arsenal doing that! Real Madrid and Barcelona are also interested so it’s impossible he goes to Arsenal.

‘I think Mbappe will stay for one more season [at Monaco] as the World Cup is coming. This season he’s been brilliant but he’s still young. If you hear what he and his family say, he’s very happy at Monaco.

Arsenal will have to splash the cash this summer if it wants to be competitive again. That has been our problem over the years, Wenger’s reluctance to spend money on players has created a gulf between us and our rivals and that gap must be bridged this transfer window.
