According to the Daily Express, Arsenal and Liverpool have been informed that they will have to part with around £14.5 million in order to acquire the services of highly-rated Villarreal forward Luciano Vietto.
A few windows back, this is precisely the kind of deal for which you would expect Arsene Wenger to have his finger on the pulse, with the diminutive Argentine still only 21 years of age and a rough diamond in need of some polishing at a truly top-level club.
However, the Gunners have taken their recruitment policy in a different direction of late, with big-money, marquee signings in the form of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez suggesting that the purse strings have finally been loosened.
But there is still much to be said for buying into potential, with the battle for Premier League supremacy in 2015/16 expected to be as fiercely contested as ever and squad depth likely to play a key role for those looking to lead the chase.
Arsenal, having staged their annual surge over the second half of the season just gone, can be backed at around 11/2 at the time of writing to get things right from the get-go next term if you visit 32Red on mobile here or others such as Titanbet or Bwin will also be setting odds on the Gunners to end a 12-year wait for top-flight glory.
Additions will undoubtedly be required if Wenger is to push for a title coronation in north London, and Vietto – whose contract release clause is set at that £14.5m fee – may well be someone he has an eye on as he looks to inject fresh legs and a heady blend of youth and experience into a well-oiled machine currently more concerned with the successful defence of their FA Cup crown on Saturday.
Attention has already started to shift towards the summer, though, with gossip columns of the paper and online variety looking to ramp things up ahead of the opening of another intriguing transfer window.
Quite how much you can read into the reports which seem to break on an almost hourly basis remains open to debate, but looking to bookmakers for a steer in which way the transfer market is moving can often shed light on the matter.
Arsenal, as you would expect, figure prominently in the running for a number of global superstars, with 32Red and others offering 4/5 on the Gunners’ reported pursuit of Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin – which suggests there may very well be movement there in the not too distant future.
A potential deal for Arturo Vidal, which has been making plenty of headlines in the Guardian, could also be pushed through. There are plenty of other interesting prices to be found, with Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema not completely out of the question.
All in all, it is shaping up to be a busy summer at the Emirates, with there the promise of deals to be done for exciting prospects such as Vietto – if interest from elsewhere can be fended off – and more established performers in the Schneiderlin/Vidal mould.
