Reported Arsenal target Kostas Manolas has rejected a new contract offer at AS Roma, according to reports.
The Greek centre back was one of our targets in the summer transfer window when we were desperately in search of defensive reinforcements. Roma were reluctant to sell and reportedly dismissed our enquiries out of hand.
We then signed Shkodran Mustafi from Valencia who has proven to be our best piece of transfer business. However, Manolas is still being linked with a move to the Emirates. Few weeks back, we covered a report which claimed Wenger has lined up Manolas as a potential replacement for Mertesacker who is attracting interest from the Bundesliga.
And we could have been a boosted in our attempt to sign Manolas with Football Italia [via HITC Sports] now claiming the defender rejected a new contract at Roma. It is believed the Italian giants offered him a new deal worth €2.5m a year but the player is holding out for a higher salary.
The defender will definitely earn more should he move to a big club like ours but it remains to be seen if he will stand his ground and force Roma into selling him next summer.
Chelsea were another club that was interested in the defender and will be keeping close watch on his situation also. Reports are still linking the 25 year old defender with both clubs but I think it is unlikely that we will make a move for him next summer.
Shkodran Mustafi has formed a strong partnership with Koscielny and even if Mertesacker leaves, we still have Gabriel, Chambers and Holding in our books. With the numerous options we have at centre back, it is more likely that the defender would join Chelsea next summer.
