The transfer deadline day draws ever closer and Arsenal still have not got the defender sorely needed to provide depth for the back four, but that could very well change soon if Wenger chooses to act on Gabriel Paulista’s professed desire to play for Arsenal if he were to be approached.
The 24-year old Sevilla centre-half has been mooted as one of the options being considered by Arsenal as far defending additions go but there have been some apparent sensible hesitation due to the possible difficulty in obtaining a work permit as he is yet to earn an International call-up from the Brazilian Senior National team. He is, however, upbeat that a move could still materialize and he wouldn’t hesitate to jump at the offer of moving to play his football at the Emirates.
According to a disclosure from the Mirror, Paulista has already discussed the possibility of leaving with the authorities Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.
“I will not lie to you. Before the end of the year, before the whole story of interest from Barcelona and Arsenal even happened, my manager was here and had a conversation with him.” Paulista said.
“One of the things I said was my dream to play in England. I have this desire. Now this [stories linking him to Arsenal], for me it was a great joy.”
It is still very far from being fulfilled, his dream, but Arsenal have had good reasons to be interested in him having been part of Unai Emery’s impressive team this season fighting hard to sneak a top four place at the end of the La Liga season.
The 6ft 1.5’ center-half has had an impressive campaign this season and word is that he has some of the capabilities of a potential top class defender whom we are in search of.
In Mertesacker and Koscielny, Wenger will feel he has two vastly experienced and capable defenders who will remain the favorite pair for the rest of the season. It would require nothing but a world class brand of a Hummels or so to knock either of and Paulista does not seem to have reached that height yet. Yet, his presence on the bench will stir the duo to be up and on their feet at all times, which will only make the team much more competitive in every department. Injuries have already played a significant role in the first half of the season and the mistake of not having square-pegged replacements cannot be repeated without suspicions of delusion becoming comfirmed.
