Arsenal’s urgent need for an additional defender is one of the worst kept secrets in English football. This need has existed since the beginning of the season, even after we signed Mattiue Debuchy and sold Thomas Vermaalen. Calum Chambers was brought in, not as one to immediately go into the first team but as a third-choice center back and second-choice right back. As it’s happened, we’ve now had to use make-shift supplements in both positions, Monreal having filled in for Koscielny against Hull.
Wenger has done well to raise our hopes that we’ll sign a defender in January but with over 1000 options suggested to him by all sections of the media, both local and International, who could we really sign to improve our team, not just in quantity but quality?
- Ron Vlaar
Vlaar was the most impressive defender to represent the Premier League in the World Cup, hence the rush for his services this summer. Arsenal and United have been linked more than any other club with Vlaar and his performances for Paul Lamberts side over his three seasons at Villa Park give an insight into why he remains a viable January option for Wenger. At 29, he is experienced enough to know what will be required of him with a move in January while his current status as captain at Villa gives him a much needed leadership quality to make Wenger’s defence more coordinated. Having said that, you don’t make comments about a player’s suitability to play for Arsenal if you were not a winner with Arsenal and the fact that Vlaar’s not fancied by an ‘Invincible’ should keep Wenger ‘s hand on the handbrakes. We’ll need someone who can do a job between January and May, but yet even beyond then.
- Virgil van Dijk
Things would have happened differently on deadline day and it would have been van Dijk rather than Welbeck we’d have signed. The 23-year old defender has re-emerged as the top target pusrsued by Wenger in January and he is quite a good prospect. Though overlooked in the summer by Louis van Gaal for the Dutch team to Brasil, he possesses Champions League experience with Celtic and has been part of Neil Lennon’s successive title winning teams in the Scottish League. He’s probably a better choice than Ron Vlaar when long-term value is factored in considering he’s only 23 and at £8m, he could turn out to be the best buy of this campaign.
- Mats Hummels
No sane manager in World football would pass up the chance to sign Germany’sWorld Cup star and Borussia Dortmund captain, Mats Hummels. The fact David Luiz was ‘worth’ £50m kind of makes you wonder if Hummels is actually affordable. Rumours of a £32m bid are too good to be true, at least for January.
- Winston Reid
West Ham’s Reid is the closest option to us and his Premier League experience means he has little to adapt to in the side. Questions remain over his top level experience but a step up to a bigger club could be the lift he requires.
Pick of the Pack: We need a young and experienced defender, who has the composure to rival Mertesacker and Koscielny. Reid’s untested beyond England, Vlaar’s winding down, Hummels’ beyond reach… Leaves us with Virgil van Dijk.
