Arsenal and Manchester United are set to go head to head in the race to sign Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez.

The Uruguay international has established himself as one of La Liga’s best centre backs and has caught Arsene Wenger’s attention with his performances.

We tried to sign the Uruguayan in the summer transfer window when we were in search of a centre back to bolster our defensive line but unsurprisingly, his club were not willing to sell him, forcing us to turn our attention to Shkodran Mustafi who joined from Valencia.

It was expected that Mustafi’s arrival would end our search for other centre backs but that has not been the case and reports suggest we are planning to add at least one more defender to our ranks next summer.

According to Sunday Mirror via the Daily Express, we have made enquiries about signing Gimenez in the future.

The same report claims Manchester United are keen too and are desperate to agree a £40m fee to lure the South American to Old Trafford next summer.

However, should we step up our interest, we could find it difficult to lure the defender to the Emirates as Atletico will be reluctant to sell their prized asset and even if they are forced to, they would likely demand his £55m release clause be activated.

All these would make a move for the defender unlikely as we don’t expect Wenger to go through that stress in signing a centre half when we already have one of the best centre back pairings in the Premier League.

Gimenez is a top talent no doubt and at 21, he has the potential to become one of the best in the world but I don’t see a move happening as we currently have plenty options in his position.
