According to reports, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger seems to be very interested in West Brom defender Johnny Evans.

Wenger is currently working on strengthening the defense and it appears Evans features high on the manager’s wish list.

Arsenal are planning a summer move for the defender as a replacement for Mertesacker and with the season starting in a fortnight the French man has now stepped up his attempts.

According to Squawka, Arsenal sent scouts to watch Evans in action during his club’s pre-season friendly.

Arsenal are also being linked with Valencia’s centre back Shkodran Mustafi but with a move for the German proving difficult to complete, Arsenal could turn to Evans who represents a cheaper option.

Wenger is a known admirer of Evans and attempted to sign him when he was at Manchester United but the Old Trafford club refused to sell to a rival.

The player then joined West Brom last summer and his impressive performances last season brought him under the radar of Wenger again.

Wenger is hoping to sign a centre back before the opening game against Liverpool and is currently running out of time. Evans made 45 appearances for West Brom in all competition last season and could be a decent addition to our squad.
