3 STARS ARSENAL MUST SIGN IN JANUARY
- A DEFENDER
It would count for nothing if we signed Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi in January if we don’t bring a defender in before that window shuts. It’s absolutely pointless. You can have a player in your team win all the personal awards for scoring the most goals in a season but to what benefit is that to the team?
The Attributes: Say we are still in the Champions League, we’d probably need someone who’s currently not in that competition so as to help out Koscielny and Mertesacker with the fixtures which come thick and fast within that period, with defence of our FA Cup also to kick in. Given that Per and Kos are both nearing their thirties, a player within the age range of 24 and 27 would be ideal, basically one who would possess sufficient experience in the game but with still more years to give for the future.
The Contenders: Mats Hummels * Ron Vlaar * Neven Subotic * Matija Nastasic
All four have been mentioned as Arsenal targets over the summer, with varying degrees of possibility about any transfer. Two of the four are captains at their clubs, creating a doubt over the likelihood of their clubs to release them. Nastasic has not hit the heights expected of him at the Etihad and with the arrival of Eliaquim Mangala, the Serb has now been relegated to be the emergency tag-team with Martin Demichelis. While that Serb is still below the age limit specified above, the other Serb on this list is just about the right blend of age, ability and experience to make him the choice from this lot.
The One: Would choose Hummels over anyone everyday of the week, but let’s face it, it won’t happen, definitely not this window, so I go for his partner, Subotic.
- A DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDER
The rumours have mostly revolved a certain German, but does he really have all it takes?
The Attributes: Ball winner, with the ability to make key interceptions and one who can be relied on to distribute the ball with the personified coolness of an Eskimo.
The Contenders: Sami Khedira * Adrien Rabiot * William Carvalho * Lassana Diarra
Diarra is free and available at the moment. He’d readily jump at the opportunity to restart his career as he has an eye on the Euros to be hosted in his home country. Carvalho could still be convinced into not signing that new Sporting contract, but is there not a man somewhere who isn’t ready to discuss any new contracts with his club?
The One: Of course there is, Sami Khedira.
- A FORWARD
Not necessarily a center forward but a real wide man who can give our midfield creators more options to make good use of their inventions. Could step into the center forward role in the future though
The Attributes: Athletic, with a good understanding of a pass and can make a nuisance of himself in and around the box.
The Contenders: Alexandre Lacazette * Julian Draxler * Pedro Rodriguez * Xherdan Shaquiri
The One: Draxler is very tempting and would become one of the brightest stars of his generation, but for sheer experience (and he’s faster too), Pedro Rodriguez is going to be a good Gunner. He’s not even wanted at Barca anymore.
