It could well be that Arsenal already have the first (of a few) potential winter signings wrapped up already, with confirmation coming from a defender’s agent that talks have already began over a move to the Emirates in January.
Italian Serie A club, SS Lazio, appear to be ready to let go of their 32-YEAR OLD defender, Cristian Ledesma, with Arsenal a possible destination.
This is, at least, according to the player’s agent, Vincenzo D’Ippolito, who did not mince words in saying that Arsenal were interested in his client’s services and that there have been contacts.
“”It’s true, Arsenal are interested in Crisitian” Vincenzo was quoted as saying.
“There were contacts, we’ll see if there will be an opportunity to progress this discussion. He’s an important player so it’s normal that he can have an agreement in the market”.
Not much can be actually read into that ‘important’ adjective used by the player’s agent qualify Ledesma as he is in fact been shipped out of Rome due to what is perceived as him being surplus to reuirements.
Lazio acquired the services of Dutch World Cup star, Stefan De Vrij, and have since had little need for the Argentine (who is an Italian International), and are believed to be looking for a club willing to take Cristian off their books as they still look forward to strengthening their back line further in the winter.
Wenger has already confirmed that the club will make effort to bring in at least one defender in January, though there was the self-defensive clause of the usually encountered difficulty in finding the players of the desired quality within the window.
Having resisted the urge to delve into the free-agents’s market, it is not expected that Wenger would just settle for any dross available by the street as the need of the Arsenal defence is not just in quantity but in the improvement of the defensive quality.
There is the consensus that one or two players who are good and experienced enough to rival both Mertesacker and Koscielny in the mid/long term should be brought in.
Virgil van Dijk, Ron Vlaar, Chris Smalling and Winston Reid have all been linked with potential moves to the Emirates though it is not certain that their clubs would be convinced enough to let them go mid way into the season. But settling for Ledesma would be no better than ringing up Mikael Silvestre to abandon Chennainyin FC in the Indian Super League to return to the Emirates for the next six months.
This could be a case of an agent carrying out extended publicity for his client who obviously needs a new job after becoming increasingly redundant in his current role.
Would be another Kallstrom signing if Wenger gave it a wink.
