Arsenal have been handed a major boost in their pursuit of a proven striker this summer with news of long time target rejecting a new contract at his current club.
According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal can now swoop in to complete the signing of Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain after recent reports that the Argentine international rejected an offer to extend his contract at Naples.
27-year-old Higuain has been heavily linked with a move away from Napoli after the club failed to qualify for the 2015/2016 Uefa Champions League.
This has seen the prolific striker heavily linked with several clubs across Europe with Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United among the clubs in England interested in landing the Argentine forward.
Higuain was close to sealing a move to Arsenal in 20013 but somehow ended up in Italy with Serie A outfit Napoli.
However, the Gunners can now get their man with claims from his brother Nicholas Higuain, who is also his agent that he has rejected an offer to extend his contract at the club; prompting suggestions that the 53 goals in 103 appearances hitman will leave Napoli.
‘We had a meeting with the President [Aurelio De Laurentiis] in Venice 10 days ago,’
‘We talked about everything. He offered a one-year contract extension, however, in my opinion – and in our opinion – we’ll continue with the original contract, expiring in 2018.
‘I don’t think we’ll accept the president’s offer, because the contract isn’t that different to the one we signed before, so for us it’s not a real offer.’
Arsene Wenger is still in search of a proven striker and might see this as his chance to get his long time target after shipping out high rated young striker Chuba Akpom on a season long-loan to Hull City recently.
