Chuba Akpom could be set to pass up the chance to turn on the green and white of the country of his father’s birth with a recent statement that seems to suggest a willingness to play for England.
The 19-year old striker has played more first team football this year with Arsenal after making his debut last season. A new contract offered to him at the Emirates was a sign that he was been given a chance to forge a big career with the Gunners and the young forward believes he will be setting his sights at not just a place in the Arsenal folklore but in the Three Lions National Team as well.
During the Gunners twitter takeover done via the club’s official twitter account, a question as to where he would see himself in the next five years met with a bold claim from an apparently convinced and determined Chuba Akpom
‘‘Hopefully still playing for Arsenal and the England senior team too. I want to emulate the Arsenal legends.” The young Gunner said.
That statement would have stabbed a long-reaching lance into the hearts of many fans of the Nigerian National team who had longed hoped that the youngster would eventually answer the call to represent the Super Eagles. The President of the Nigerian Football Federation, Amaju Pinnick, had reportedly met with Chuba and fellow academy teammate Alex iwobi with the view of convincing them through their families to represent the recently deposed African Champions at the highest level on the International stage but while Alex – a nephew to Nigerian Football legend, Jay Jay Okocha – looks set to join up with the Nigerian Under-23s in March, Chuba looks to have already made his mind up on playing for the Three Lions.
On the other hand, it will be a decision that would please English gooners who must be yearning for a homegrown striker to finally burst onto the International scene. Not since Ian Wright have the Gunners had a striker who became a regular with the Three Lions while playing for Arsenal and it is no coincidence that Akpom has been likened to a synthesis of both Wright and Henry.
His amazing turn out of goals for the England Under-21s gives him a good chance of making it with the National team and while that is still a long shot, steady improvements with the first team at Arsenal could see him rise in stock soon.
