The top two football teams in London for many years have been Arsenal and Chelsea. This therefore brings a rivalry between the two clubs.
They are both at the top of world football when it comes to wealth and talent. Chelsea have sprung to the top of English football since the early 2000s following the takeover by Roman Abramovich. At that point they were often challenging Arsenal for the top four and title honours.
Ahead of this weekend’s London derby Chelsea are currently 1.81 favourites to beat the Gunners. Many are considering them one of the safest English Premier League bets for the weekend. Antonio Conte’s side could get a big advantage in the Premier League title race with three points over their rivals on Sunday.
Here’s a look how the two clubs have fared in the past:
Arsenal were founded back in 1886 and have had a vast amount of success from the early days. The club is based in North London and have a huge fan base all over the world. The club’s major successes include 13 league titles, 2 League Cups, one UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup and a record-breaking 13 FA Cup trophies.
They are of course known for their season where they remained unbeaten for all 38 Premier League games and were called the ‘Invincibles’ at the time. Arsenal last won the Premier League title back in the 2003/04 season when they had the services of the prolific Thierry Henry. The club is currently ranked as the 6th most valuable in the world with a value of £1.93 billion.
Chelsea on the other hand were founded in 1905 and are known by many as the Blues. The club is based in West London and has quickly become one of the top teams in world football with fans all over the world. The club has won 21 trophies since 1997 that includes 6 Premier League titles, 7 FA Cups, 5 League Cups, 1 UEFA Champions League and 1 Europa League.
Chelsea have also won the UEFA Super Cup as well as two UEFA Cup Winners’ Cups. They are the current champions of England and will be expected to go close in defending their crown this season. They are currently ranked as the 7th most valuable in the world just behind Arsenal with a value of £1.84 billion.
Arsenal and Chelsea have played each other on 192 different occasions. This has resulted in a fairly even split with Arsenal winning 74 times compared to Chelsea’s 62 with 56 draws in the process. The first meeting happened back in the football league season of 1907/08 in which Chelsea were victorious by 2 goals to 1. The largest margin of victory occurred back in 2014 in which Chelsea whitewashed Arsenal 6-0.
Didier Drogba; one of Chelsea’s best strikers is also the most prolific in the fixture with a record 13 goals. The most recent meeting between the two teams was in the FA Community Shield at Wembley back in August. The game ended 0-0 but Arsenal were victorious on penalties by 4 goals to 1 in which Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was among those who missed a penalty.
