Mikel Arteta has angered the Arsenal squad ahead of his appointment as Arsene Wenger’s successor, it has been claimed.

Arteta is expected to be named Arsenal’s new head coach in the coming days after agreeing in principle to take on the job.

According to Goal, the 36-year-old requested the club bin head of medical services Gary Lewin.

Lewin had been at Arsenal for 23 years but it is claimed that Arteta blames him for rushing him back from injury.

And the recommendation reportedly left players and staff shocked and upset.

A host of Wenger’s backroom team have departed the Emirates Stadium in the wake of his exit.

Assistant manager Boro Primorac, first-team coach Neil Banfield, goalkeeping specialist Gerry Peyton, fitness coach Tony Colbert and equipment manager Paul Johnson have also been axed.

Starsport revealed earlier this week that the club’s three physios – Ben Ashworth, Andrew Rolls and James Haycock – have been told there will be just one position open to them.

Arteta is a divisive appointment due to his lack of managerial experience.

The Spaniard has spent the last two years since retiring as part of Pep Guardiola’s coaching staff at Manchester City.

Guardiola has given Arteta his blessing to pursue the vacancy at Arsenal.

“What we have done this season, Mikel, his contribution was outstanding, amazing,” he said.

“We were together so good, all the staff, with Mikel. So if he stays I will be happiest guy in the world. If he decides to move because he has this offer, this option, I will not say you don’t have to go [you can’t go].”

Wenger has backed Arsenal’s decision to appoint a rookie boss as his successor.

The Frenchman said: ”He has all the qualities to do the job, yes and I think as well he is one of the favourites.

“He was a leader, and he has a good passion for the game and he knows the club well, he knows what is important at the club and he was captain of the club. Why not?”

Arteta will work as a head coach alongside head of recruitment Sven Mislintat and head of football relations Raul Sanllehi in a revamped managerial structure.
