Arsenal star Per Mertesaker hints at a move away from the Emirates at the end of the season.
The defender is in the final year of his contract and is yet to receive a new offer. He is currently out with a knee injury and is not expected to return to action until early next year. Wenger recently revealed he would want to watch the midfielder prove his fitness before offering him a new contract.
Speaking in an interview with sports magazine Kicker, the defender revealed he will consider his future in the winter transfer window if a new contract is not forth coming. Players are allowed to enter talks with other clubs when they have six months or less in their current contract and Mertesacker will be free to discuss with anyone by January.
The defender has been a Gunner since the summer of 2011 and has admitted he is targeting a move back to Germany.
“My contract with Arsenal expires next year, and I would like it to change something,” he said, as quoted by the Daily Star.
“Of course, I wonder what would make sense for me, if it should not go on with Arsenal.
“Where can I be helpful then? What do I want? Could you possibly go back to Germany again?
“I imagine, what prospects can open up for me and the family, also in Germany. And I think that from January these thoughts are very intensified.”
Arsenal appear to be doing very well in the German’s absence, keeping four clean sheets in its last five games. However, losing the German international permanently will be a big blow, he is currently our club captain and one of the most experienced players in the team.
His experience will be very useful to the team and can still offer a lot as a squad player.
