Former Tottenham January target Granit Xhaka will be the Gunner’s first signing this summer after Wenger edged out Liverpool and fellow North London rivals in the race to sign the Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder.
The midfielder has been linked with a move to the Emirates since the last winter transfer window. Reports have been making the rounds that the Gunners are prepared to return for the midfielder’s services this summer after the failed attempt to sign him in January and with the club reportedly preparing for a summer overhaul of the midfield, Wenger has identified Xhaka as his top target and has reopened negotiations to sign the midfielder.
According to the times via the Daily Star, Arsenal already submitted an opening £24m bid which was rejected by the German club but Wenger is set to return with an improved offer.
Both clubs are confident a deal will be agreed before the end of the season making Xhaka Wenger’s first signing this summer.
The German club are holding out for a fee of £32m which Arsenal are unlikely to pay but hope to reach a compromise with Monchengladbach.
The 23 year old has already stated his desire to play in the Premier League and will definitely be open to a move to Arsenal.
“I think everybody has a dream,” Xhaka said. “Everybody has a childhood dream and that’s my childhood dream. If my dream comes true, it remains to be seen. At the moment I cannot say how realistic it is.”
