Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho is targeted by Arsenal and Manchester United.
Arsenal target William Carvalho appears to still be available for business according to Express.
The 22-year old defensive midfielder has been the subject of hot pursiut by several of top clubs, with Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United taught to have been in the lead. After a hugely impressive season at Sporting, followed by a decent shift in Portugal’s brief exploit in Brasil, he was tipped to join one of the two clubs. Arsenal had at least one bid in the region of £24million rejected by Sporting, the fee over £10million short of the buyout clause contained in his contract.
Sporting were adamant on not letting the player go, and have now offered him an improved deal which will see him earn as much as five times his current wage, while the buy-out clause still remains at £37 million. This will come as good news to either of Arsenal or Manchester United and maybe Chelsea; who are all red alert on the players situation.
Carvalho himself has been reported as stating that he had not pondered an exit from Portugal despite all the interest around him. That though may have been a political statement as it is still believed that his struggles to repeat his form of last season which gained him all the attention are due to a desire to move elsewhere.
By his own admission, he is still yet to be the player he was last season. There is no certainty that he will not leave the club if the exit fee is matched, neither is there any agreement that the player wouldn’t take a chance to play in the best League in the world, featuring amongst the best players. Luis Figo, Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani were promising prodigies at Sporting but all had to leave at one stage to really make the break through their potentials were tipped for.
Arsenal’s need for a defensive midfielder is one of the worst kept secrets in world football and injury to club captain Mikel Arteta has only made the matter a bit more dire. Flamini has shown flashes of inconsistency, having been found guilty of losing the ball on two separate occasions – against City and Tottenham – from which the opponents broke and scored. It therefore calls to mind the need Wenger has of a strong, reliable holding midfield player who is comfortable on the ball and will be able to lift pressure of his teammates rather than create the pressure. In Carvalho, Wenger will get the most reliable defensive midfielder planet earth currently can afford, and at 22, he is just learning his trade. A player widely acclaimed for his passing range, he also possesses that physique and strength which makes him tailor-made for this kind of role.
Offer them the fee and match his wage and see if his head will not be turned.
