Arsenal majority share owner Stan Kroenke has indicated he wants Arsene Wenger to continue as our manager beyond the current campaign.
Wenger’s contract expires at the end of the season and he is yet to sign a new deal. Reports are claiming he could step down at the end of the season and we are already preparing for his departure.
Bournemouth’s Eddie Howe has been tipped to takeover as manager but Kroenke has now revealed our priority is to get Wenger to sign a new deal.
Our owner was speaking at the annual general meeting where he praised Wenger’s achievements in the 20 years he has spent with us and hinted that the club would want the boss to continue. The Chief cited Manchester United’s difficulty to replace Sir Alex Fegurson as a reason why it is important to keep Wenger.
“You see it (at United), you bring up a comment like that,” Kroenke said, as quoted by the Telegraph.
“It’s very hard. We are all very high on Arsene. We are at the top of the table right now. He’s a great manager. He’s been a wonderful influence on the club.
“I know a number of (sports team) owners who are very successful who say the same thing; the hardest thing to do is be consistently competitive at the top of the league. Arsene has always done that and Arsenal has always been in that position. We have always been competitive.
“We may not always win the things we want to win. We are very focused on winning for sure the league. Arsene’s been consistently at the top and I will tell you; it’s very, very hard to do if you look around sports.”
Kroenke does have a point, replacing a manager who has stayed so long with us isn’t easy. It would even be more difficult to replace Wenger if he decides to wait until the end of the season before announcing his departure, leaving us with ample time to search for a replacement. However, we are confident that he will sign a contract extension with us.
