Followers of Arsenal Football Club must be delighted to hear that the club is monitoring a defender, with the possibility of a move for him in the January transfer window possible, according to reports.
Aymeric Laporte, 20, is one of the most promising defenders whose performances have continued to attract great reviews around the world, having played a commanding role in Athletic Bilbao’s successful qualification for the Champions League group stages this season following their fourth place finish in the La Liga last season. The young French defender has been mentioned in connection with a possible move to one of Europe’s big clubs, with the likes of Barcelona rumoured to have expressed an interest.
The young French U21 International recently signed a contract extension to keep him at Bilbao till 2018, the club clearly recognizing the interest aroused the world over by his talents. They have also made sure they will benefit from any eventual sale of the player by inserting a £34m buy-out clause to his contract.
Arsene Wenger has marked Laporte as the right man to fill the gaps in defensive options for the Gunners, with injuries threatening to cripple our campaign even at this infant stage of the season. Wenger passed up the chance to strengthen the central defense in the summer, acquiring just Calum Chambers from Southampton, while the long-serving experienced duo of ex-captain Thomas Vermaelen and Bacary Sagna were allowed to leave. We’ve now had to manage the lone pair of Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny in the majority of our games this season, with the recent scare to Koscielny sure to have caused goosebumps on many a gooner.
Wenger now seems ready to address that need in the coming window, targeting the Basque-schooled defender as his prime option. Laporte certainly has the physical qualities to thrive as a center half at 6ft 2in, which has seen him famous for strong composed tackling, establishing himself as one of the most cherished of the San Mames faithful.
Laporte has been classed in the category of the most exciting crop of emerging defenders like fellow countryman Rafael Varane, who is also understood to be one of Wenger’s keen admires. With the pair of Kos and Mert showing some uncertain signs this season, Wenger may now be looking towards the future of the team. Arsene has hinged the new Arsenal on young shoulders like Jack Wilshere, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Danny Welbeck and he looks set to make this renovation holistic by addressing the shortage in defense.
