Sami Khedira could be Arsenal’s first signing in January.
Real Madrid are about to exact their transfer imperialism on Europe with reports that they are lining up a sensational swap deal with Juventus for Aturo Vidal, in exchange for Arsenal target – Sami Khedira.
The German midfielder has been the subject of one of the most hotly expected transfer possibilities this summer, Arsenal tipped to be favourites for the 27-year old’s signature. Rumours had appeared that Jose Mourinho was scheming a hijack with a tempting swap deal which will involve relegated goalkeeper Petr Cech.
Khedira’s contract situation has hit the walls at the Bernabeu and with Madrid willing to not let him run down the remaining months on the bench.
On the value market, Khedira is worth around £10m and he is definitely not of equal value with Vidal. The Juve man was linked with a move to Manchester United but a move was never close to materialising, the player himself declaring he wasn’t considering any exit from Turin. That said, the lure of playing for the current European Champions may prove quite irresistible, especially given he has been a solid part of most of what Antonio Conte had achieved in the last 3 Serie A seasons.
Khedira is in the last year of his current deal at the Bernabeu and while he may be willing to run down his deal, Madrid would be inclined to service some of their existing debt from any revenue they could recoup from any source possible. He is also sure to get first team football in Juve, as long as he can show adaptation to the stiffness of the Serie A – a factor which could still swing Khedira’s interest in Arsenal’s favour.
The Vidal factor will be decisive, as Khedira may be forced against his will. Fiorentino Perez is famous for getting who he wants at whatever cost. It doesnt appear they have a real need for Vidal, having acquire Toni Kroos in the summer window. The mega splash for Colombian World Cup star James Rodriguez from Monaco also shows the money won’t be an issue for Ancelotti.
It will surely be the ultimate suckerpunch to Wenger’s ambitions to strengthen the team by January, with a world class player in the defensive midfield role. Injuries to key players have created a wish amongst fans for the window to come sooner than later, Khedira’s countryman being the latest big name casualty.
Wenger is no minnow in the football world, and must not go down without a fight. Also given the fact that we are also advantaged in the run-in for his signature.
