Ex Gunner Dennis Bergkamp has revealed why Arsenal have struggled to win the Premier League title in recent years.
The club last won the league title in 2004 and has come close to winning it on several occasions only for the team to fall out of the title race in crucial moments.
Bergkamp has now revealed that the lack of quality in defense is costing the team a lot. Referring to the 3-3 draw at Boelyn ground and the 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace, Bergkamp believes the team’s weakness is in the defense and the French tactician is hampering his hopes of winning the league title by deploying a weak defense.
Bergkamp believes should the team remain vulnerable at the back, we would struggle to lift the league title.
“Arsenal have a really good team and a really, really good squad,” Bergkamp told the Daily Mail, as quoted by the Standard. “They’ve got tremendous players and they should be able to win the championship, but one of the biggest problems is defence.
“So many times the team have to react to going a goal behind or two goals behind. That happens too much. And at this time of the year you can’t drop points.
“We would always have a dip in November, but their dip has come in the second half of the season. That didn’t happen a lot in our time.”
Bergkamp’s statement has defended Ian Wright claims that the team’s weak link is at the heart of defense. However, Wenger is reportedly interested in strengthening the position ahead of next season and is being linked with a move to sign Roma’s Kostas Manolas.
