Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud insists he is not to blame for the team’s failure to win the league title this season.
Arsenal were heavily tipped to win the league title midway through the campaign but threw away the golden opportunity to do so in March and Giroud who came under severe criticism has stated he is not the reason the club failed to win the league .
Fans and Pundits have called for Wenger to sign a world class striker if he wants to realize the dream of winning the Premier League but Giroud believes the whole team was at fault for the failed title challenge. Giroud insists the team’s performances against smaller teams cost Wenger’s men the title.
“We thought this was going to be our year when we beat Leicester [2-1] at home,” Giroud told the Guardian as quoted by the Express.
“Unfortunately we dropped points at the Emirates against the supposedly lesser teams.”
He added: “For some reason we always seem to have this dip around March. Not just me, if you look at our best players, such as Mesut [Ozil] who made less assists after the turn of the year [16 before January and four after].
“In my first year we finished fourth, the following season third and now second. We will have to improve on that to take the final step next season.”
The striker had a barren spell between January – April which coincided with the team’s dip in performance and was heavily criticized for the club’s failed title challenge but the striker insists this season was still one of his best in an Arsenal shirt despite not scoring a single goal between January and April.
“I accept criticism because it is difficult for a striker to go through a drought like I had in the second part of the season,” he said.
“I still had six very good months and at the end of the day, when you collect the stats, this was perhaps my best season with Arsenal.”
Arsenal finally finished second at the end of the season, five points behind league winners Leicester City.
