We know Arsenal have bought Krystian Bielik to play in the first team as a defensive midfielder but it does seem as though Wenger will still be looking for some recognized player for the present as there are reports according to Daily Star that a £9 million move is on for Newcastle’s Chiek Tiote and talks have already been held with representatives of the 28-year-old Ivorian.
Tiote has always been mooted as one of Arsene’s potential targets in defensive midfield but nothing has materialized over the past transfer windows but there is now a huge chance of something coming through.
Newcastle may be hesitant in letting go of his teammate, Moussa Sissoko, but in Jack Colback, they have one who could be a dependable holding midfielder who has played very well so far in Tiote’s absence.
The Ivorien International revealed that “it was true” that Arsenal indicated interest in signing him over the summer, as well as a Russian club. He, however, said that he would prefer to stay “in England” – a statement which is curiously open-ended as it is nowhere near a confirmation of loyalty to Newcastle. He was a trusted machinery of Alan Pardew’s during the tides and turbulence at Tyneside, even being handed the captain’s armband on regular occasions when Fabricio Collocini would not be available.
Though part of Ivory Coast’s squad at Equatorial Guinea for the African Cup of Nations, Tiote could have his mind on the goings-on at St. James’ where caretaker boss, John Carver has struggled so far to keep the squad on the form it was in before the departure of Alan Pardew. With his International teammate, Wilfred Bony, moving “up” from Swansea to City, the hard-tackling Toon may want to follow the footsteps to upgrade his own career too.
With Arsenal in desperate need of a midfield enforcer, Tiote comes in as a very handy option as he possesses the experience of the Premier League as he would not need time to adapt to the dynamics of the pace and strength of the League. The lure of playing in the Champions League must appeal to him also. The price being talked about does not appear to be as hefty as may be required for the likes of Bender or Carvalho and so affords us the leisure of getting a good player for a good bargain.
Tiote has only ever scored one Premier League goal since he arrived in 2011 – a 25-yard belter with his weaker left-foot in THAT 4-4 draw against Arsenal.
