The irresistible routine that proceeds from the Alexis Sanchez cuisine has gone someway to nullify the other gaps in the Arsenal team but for the quiet observer, the need to land a defensive midfielder remains clear and glaring, and maybe the club is aware and will be doing much within the next two weeks to push through a deal that will bring in the much followed William Carvalho.
This is according to the Telegraph, who believe that Wenger will finally make effort to end their long-drawn out pursuit of the outstanding 22-year old Portuguese International, not by pulling out but by paying all of £25m to seal it once and for all.
Carvalho has consistently been linked with a potential switch to the Emirates since the summer of 2014 but a deal reportedly fell through due to a high buyout clause set by Sporting Lisbon. He has spoken out once on his wish to make a move one day either to La Liga or the Premier League and it appears that move could happen within this transfer window, England being the likely destination.
Sporting were eliminated from the Group Stage of the Champions League and with the battle for the Portuguese Championship set between Benfica and Porto, there may be a good chance for the player to seek new adventure now rather than wait till the summer. He will still be in high demand then but the possibility of his fee increasing due to a tip in the number of interested clubs would want to make the Gunners know the last of this possibility as soon as possible.
Arsene Wenger boasts an impressive assortment of attacking midfielders, with some who had been injured for long working their ways up to full fitness. However, the position of the defensive midfielder has been, in the opinion of most observers and fans, lacking in quality even if have been two dedicated staff for that role in the past two seasons, Arteta and Flamini. Neither one, though, has come across as a true warrior who can stand side-by-side with the likes of Matic, Fernandinho and Morgan Schneiderlin, some of the best in the Premier League, and for a team whose intentions should be set on winning major trophies, make-shift options should not be gloried in.
It rests on the club to do the needful which is going out and reaching out to the highly placed drawers. United, Chelsea and City are constantly looking at how to improve their teams every window and so must Arsene Wenger and his Arsenal. He would have found someone like Daley Blind as one of the most reliable of defensive midfielders but there are still a few more out there, fewer better than Carvalho.
